To the North we go!

To the North we go!

February 04, 2019

We drove from Rome northwards, via the scenic route, past Spoleto and the medieval aqueduct in route to Assisi.

We arrived at Assisi mid-morning, ate lunch al fresco (it was a beautiful day), played with the olive trees, enjoyed a Lavender store (everything made with fresh lavender)

After lunch, we met our local specialist Margherita for a tour of the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. The Basilica was built on the side of a mountain, it contains 2 churches (an upper and a lower) and a crypt (final resting place of St Francis). No pictures were allowed inside the churches or the crypt, the walls of the church are decorated in frescoes by medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools. Margherita did an amazing job describing them and noting the differences between periods and schools. Next to the Basilica, it's the friary Sacro Convento; the Sacro Convento was built with pink and white stone from Mount Subasio.

After the visit to the Basilica, we wandered thru the town and made a stop at a local wine shop where we spent some time sampling the wares. BTW, well worth the money!
